About 4,500 people fall from scaffolds each year, suffering injuries
often requiring hospitalization. On average, 50 victims will die as a
result of such accidents. OSHA implemented safety standards in 1971 to
provide a safer working environment for construction workers. These standards control the manner in which scaffolds can be erected and when they can be used. Workers are in danger when scaffolds are loaded beyond their limits, when the scaffolding is made from improper materials, when there is no overhead protection to ward off falling debris, or even when weather conditions such as wind or rain make working on scaffolds too dangerous.
